When a hard disk begins to make abnormal noises such as clicking or grinding, it is a good indicator that electrical or mechanical damage has taken place. Its imperative the media be powered down immediately. Failure to do this may contribute to permanent data loss, perhaps even at the next restart.
Clicking sounds are usually the result of a misaligned or damaged read/write head that is unable to align with the disk platter(s) – this forces the drive to keep resetting itself. A grinding sound is usually the result of a head crash which, if not turned off, will cause unrecoverable damage.
Don't risk permanent data loss! Don't get frustrated and thump your drive or leave it running. Don't install and attempt to run software on it. The drive should be turned off at the first instance of an unusual noise.
Trust your data to a data recovery professional who routinely recovers data from these types of situations. These symptoms require your drive to be examined and recovered by professionals.
